CABOOLTURE BREAST CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
Caboolture Breast Cancer Support Group is a not for profit community organisation, membership consists of men and women who have had breast cancer. It has been in existence since about 1999 and is an initiative of Queensland Health, Brisbane Northside Health District.
The group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at Sails Restaurant, Suttons Beach, Redcliffe from 10 am to 12 Noon and at the Caboolture Community Health Centre, Bury Street, Caboolture (adjacent to Caboolture Hospital) from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Women with advanced (metastatic or secondary) breast cancer meet from 2 to 4 pm at the Coffee Club Northlakes. New members and their supporters are welcome to attend.
Meetings are intended to link all people within the Brisbane Northside Health district who have had breast cancer so that they can freely discuss issues of mutual concern and interest. Speakers and events are arranged to inform and educate members on all matters requested by the members. A wide range of topics is covered, extending beyond medical matters and encompassing all member interests.
People who do not wish to attend meetings but would like to keep updated on information about the support group and/or local resources and events are invited to place their names on the mailing list for the monthly newsletter.
Some activities that members enjoy are weekly aqua exercise sessions followed by lunch at the Burpengary Aquatic Centre; monthly afternoon meetings to make "Bottles of Hope"; monthly lunch meetings at Sizzlers, Morayfield; various fund raising events such as Gift Wrapping, Sausage Sizzles, Raffles and Mini-Fields of Women. Some members enjoy participating on information tables at local shopping centres and events. A few members participated in the Coolum to Noosa Walk for Breast Cancer, some attended the "Field of Women Live" on the MCG in May 2005 and more attended the "Field of Women Live" at Telstra Stadium in 2007. Some members participated in the first Redcliffe Relay for Life and were presented with a trophy as the team that raised the most, they raised over $5000 for The Cancer Council Queensland. All activities are presented at the request of members and participation is absolutely optional. Many members simply wish to keep themselves informed and do not participate in any of the activities.
The support group is run by the members for the members and every effort is made to meet the personal needs of each unique individual.
This group is a member group of Breast Cancer Network Australia. www.bcna.org.au
